Why Your Shopify Catalog Shows 0 Products and How to Fix It

A zero count in the Agentic Storefronts screen means a requirement is not met, not a broken channel. Every requirement on Shopify's list, in checking order, with the fix for each.

Why Your Shopify Catalog Shows 0 Products and How to Fix It

You opened the Agentic Storefronts section in your Shopify admin, and the Catalog line says 0 products. The channels below it look connected. Your products are fine. So why does Shopify report an empty catalog?

Because that number is not a channel you forgot to switch on. It is an eligibility count. Shopify Catalog is, in Shopify's words, "a structured source of product information gathered from eligible products" (Shopify Help Center). If your store and products meet the requirements, products are included automatically. If the count reads zero, something on the requirements list is not met yet. Every blocker has a documented fix.

This article walks the full requirements list in the order worth checking, from the most common product-level blockers to the store-level and account-level ones. Everything below comes from Shopify's own documentation.

First, the product-level blockers

These are the most common causes, and the fastest to check. Shopify requires each product to have all of the following (requirements):

  • A title and at least 1 product image. Products with no image are excluded. If you imported a catalog and images failed to migrate, this is the first thing to check.
  • A price greater than zero. Free products are not included in Shopify Catalog. If you sell a free sample or a $0 companion item, it will not appear, and that is by design.
  • Publication to your online store (or to a Hydrogen or Headless channel). A product that exists only in draft, or only in a non-storefront channel, does not count.
  • An identifiable product URL. The search engine listing section of each product controls this. A product with no URL Shopify can identify is excluded.
  • No Unlisted status, and not hidden from search engines. Both settings remove the product from Shopify Catalog, not just from Google.
  • No sensitive content, such as mature content, which Shopify excludes from the catalog.

If your count is low rather than zero, these same rules explain the gap: the count reflects how many products clear every bar, not how many products your store holds.

Second, the store-level blockers

If every product passes the list above and the count still reads zero, check the store itself:

  • Plan and lock screen. Your store must be on the Starter plan or higher, and it cannot be in private mode behind a password page (requirements). A password-protected storefront is treated as closed, and its products are excluded from AI channels.
  • Account standing. Shopify also applies "eligibility requirements related to your Shopify account, store activity, and policy standing." In Shopify's words, account standing "is based on a number of factors, and is reviewed over time" (requirements). Shopify lists the steps that improve standing: verify your email address, turn on two-step authentication, complete identity checks when prompted, maintain genuine sales, fulfill orders, keep your chargeback rate low, and pay invoices on time. A brand-new store with no sales history can sit at zero for this reason alone. That is not a bug, and there is no toggle for it. Standing builds with operating history.

If you sell B2B, read this section twice

Agentic storefronts support direct-to-consumer sales only. Products sold exclusively to business or wholesale customers are "automatically excluded from AI channels when Shopify can identify them" (product discovery). Shopify identifies B2B-only products three ways: products published only to B2B catalogs, products that require a customer login before viewing, and storefronts in private mode.

The reverse also happens. If you hide prices or gate products using third-party apps or custom theme code instead of Shopify's B2B tools, Shopify "might not be able to detect that these products are intended only for B2B customers, and they might display on your agentic storefronts" (product discovery). Custom access controls can fail in both directions: expected products missing, and restricted products showing.

Headless and developer-built stores get one extra rule

If your storefront is Hydrogen or Headless, products must also use the correct format for routes to be included (requirements). This is the requirement most likely to affect stores with a developer-built storefront, and the one generic troubleshooting advice skips. And if you are on the Shopify Agentic plan and have not published an online store, each product must include the external product URL field.

What a zero count does not mean

Two clarifications keep this in perspective.

A zero count is not an opt-out, and it is not permanent. You cannot opt out of Shopify Catalog itself, and by the same token there is no "off" switch leaving you at zero; the number simply reflects eligibility (Shopify Catalog). Fix the blocking requirement and the count follows.

And a zero catalog count does not make your store invisible to AI. AI crawlers can still reach your store through the open web, the same way search engines do (product discovery). The catalog is one way AI finds your store, not the only way.

The flip side matters too. Shopify states plainly that being included "doesn't guarantee that a product will appear in a specific AI answer, be ranked in a specific position, or be displayed by every channel that's connected to Shopify Catalog" (Shopify Catalog). A count above zero makes your products eligible for the AI channels connected to Shopify Catalog. It does not decide whether those channels recommend you.

The fix order

Work it as a sequence:

  • Spot-check five products for an image, a price above zero, online store publication, and a search engine listing.
  • Check none are Unlisted or hidden from search engines.
  • Confirm the store is not behind a password page.
  • If you run B2B alongside retail, confirm which products are published to B2B catalogs only.
  • If headless, confirm route format with your developer.
  • For a new store, check the account standing steps and give it time.

This was problem one

In Catalog vs. Citations, this series split AI visibility into two problems: the catalog side, where Shopify syndicates your product feed for you, and the citation side, whether AI engines that answer questions in your category name your store. A zero count is a catalog-side problem. Fixing it repairs the feed. It does not decide whether an AI answer recommends you, because that judgment reads your pages, your theme's structured data, and your content. That side is yours, and it is the side our audit measures.
