AI Overview Check: How to See If Google's AI Cites Your Site

You rank well organically, but does Google's AI Overview actually cite your site? Here is how to check your AI Overview visibility step by step, what to fix first, and how to tell the difference between being retrieved and being cited.

Google AI Overviews sit at the top of search results for a growing share of queries. When Google generates one of these summaries, it pulls content from a few sources and cites them inline. If your site is not one of those sources, the click goes to whoever is.

You probably track your organic rankings. Maybe your click-through rates too. But do you know whether Google's AI cites your pages? Most people do not. It is a blind spot that costs traffic, and it is fixable.

What an AI Overview check actually tells you

It answers one question: when someone searches for something related to your business, does the AI summary cite your site?

This is different from checking your ranking. You can rank third for a query and still not show up in the AI Overview. Google picks sources from the top-ranking pages, but it does not cite all of them. It cites the ones whose content answers the question most directly and is easiest to extract.

Ranking gets you retrieved. Being cited is a separate gate. The check measures that second outcome.

Step 1: Find queries that trigger AI Overviews

Not every search gets an AI Overview. Google generates them mostly for informational queries, questions, comparisons, and how-to searches. A search like "buy Nike running shoes size 10" probably will not get one. "What is the best CRM for a small consulting firm" probably will.

Build a list of 10 to 15 queries your customers would search. Questions and comparisons work best. Check Google Search Console for queries that already drive impressions to your site. Think about the questions your customers ask you directly.

Step 2: Search each query and look for the overview

This part is manual. It is also the most important step, and no tool can fully replace it.

Go to Google. Search each query on your list. Look at the top of the results. If you see a block of generated text with source citations, that is the AI Overview. If you just see regular search results, Google did not generate one for that query.

When you do see an overview, read it. Look at the source links Google cites. Is your site there?

Track what you find. Query, does it trigger an overview, are you cited, who is cited instead. A spreadsheet works fine.

This takes about 20 minutes for 10 queries. It gives you a direct, honest signal that no automated tool replicates, because no tool perfectly matches what Google shows a specific user at a specific moment.

Step 3: Check whether Google's AI crawler can read your site

Not showing up in AI Overviews? The first thing to rule out is a crawl block.

Google uses a crawler token called Google-Extended to control whether your content feeds AI features like AI Overviews and Gemini. This is separate from regular Googlebot crawling. Your pages can rank fine organically and still be excluded from AI Overviews if Google-Extended is blocked.

Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt in your browser. Search for "Google-Extended." If you find this:

User-agent: Google-Extended
Disallow: /

Your content is blocked from Google's AI features. You keep your organic rankings, but you will not appear in AI Overviews.

Test it directly from a terminal:

curl -A "Google-Extended" -I https://yourdomain.com/

A 200 response means access works. A 403 means something is blocking it.

This block is more common than you might think. WordPress security plugins, Cloudflare Bot Fight Mode, and inherited site templates can all introduce it without the site owner knowing.

Step 4: Check whether your content is extractable

If Google-Extended is allowed and you still are not cited, the problem is usually extraction. Your page ranks well enough to get pulled into the candidate pool, but Google's model finds it easier to pull an answer from a competitor's page.

Look at the pages that DO get cited in AI Overviews for your queries. They share a pattern. A heading that mirrors the question. A direct answer in the first sentence. Specific details below.

Now look at your page. Does it lead with the answer? Or does it lead with company history, a vague introduction, and three paragraphs of context before getting to the point?

If a competitor's page answers the question in the first sentence and yours makes the model dig for it, the competitor wins. Even if you rank higher.

Step 5: Run an automated audit

The manual checks above cover a lot. An automated audit covers the rest.

Run a free audit at parceit.com/audit. The audit engine checks every signal that determines whether you appear in AI Overviews and other AI search engines: crawler access, structured data, content structure, robots.txt, sitemap, internal linking. You get a score from 0 to 100 and a prioritized fix list. No signup required.

How this fits the IAB framework

The IAB published "Measuring Visibility in the AI Era" on August 3, 2026. It breaks AI visibility into four dimensions: Presence, Prominence, Portrayal, and Persuasion.

Your AI Overview check maps to the first three.

Presence is Step 3. Can Google's AI crawler reach your pages?

Prominence is Steps 1 and 2. Does your page rank well enough to enter the candidate pool?

Portrayal is Step 4. Can Google's model extract a clean, accurate answer from your page?

The IAB also distinguishes between directional and decision-grade measurement. Checking your robots.txt is directional. Searching real queries and tracking whether Google actually cites you is decision-grade. Step 2 is the closest thing to decision-grade measurement you can do on your own.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if I appear in Google AI Overviews?

Search Google for queries related to your business, focusing on questions and comparisons. Look for the AI summary at the top of the results and check whether your site appears in the source citations. Run this for 10 to 15 queries to get a meaningful sample.

Can I see AI Overview citations in Google Search Console?

No. Google Search Console reports organic impressions, clicks, and positions. It does not tell you whether your site was cited in an AI Overview. You have to search the queries yourself or use a specialized AI visibility tool.

Why do I rank well but not appear in AI Overviews?

Ranking makes you eligible. It does not guarantee citation. Google picks sources from top-ranking pages based on how directly they answer the question and how easy the answer is to extract. If your page buries the answer under introductory text, a competitor with a cleaner page gets cited instead.

How long after fixing issues will I appear in AI Overviews?

Robots.txt changes can take effect within days. Content restructuring takes longer because Google needs to re-crawl and re-evaluate your pages. Expect weeks, not hours. Check periodically using the manual method in Step 2.
